“Last-Second Field Goal Propels Lions to Victory Over Texans in Sunday Night Thriller”
After a dramatic comeback on Sunday night football, the Detroit Lions managed to trump the Houston Texans 26-23 with a last second, 52-yard field goal from Jake Bates. Down 23-7 at the half the Tigers stormed back to score the last 19 points to capture their seventh consecutive win.
Nevertheless, the Lions’ quarterback Jared Goff played a rather erratic game but still helped his team attain a win as he threw five interceptions. Goff was one of only three quarterbacks since 1990 to win a game with that many picks. Houston’s quarterback C.J. Stroud was not spared as he threw two interferences and was sacked four times.
Lions Secure Seventh Straight Win with Last-Second Field Goal Against Texans
It took Houston time to get into the game; it scored a touchdown taking advantage of an early interception by Goff. Late in the third quarter after Detroit turned the ball over on downs in their third possession in their own territory, the Texans kicker Shayne Graham booted another field goal to extend the Texans’ lead to 10-0. The Lions then came back with an 11-play drive of 70-yards to trim the lead to 10-7, but their offence again fumbled in this match.
The last four times Detroit possessed the football in the first half they had to punt or turn the ball over on an interception while the Texans made up for the lost ground with two more field goals and a 15-yard touchdown run by rookie John Metchie.
The second half which saw both quarterbacks getting interceptions in turn was before the Lions started their uptick. After the touchdown, it was 23-13, Detroit; however, the remaining half of the game was something of a stalemate: turnovers and punts characterized the play.
After the 64-yard, Detroit is tied the score at 23- all with a field goal before the end of the game. Houston had a last shot but the kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn failed to attempt 58 yards and the Lions began their final drive in a comfortable position. There was Bates seeing his opportunity and booting the 52-yarder for the win.
The Lions are now 8-1, and atop the NFC, they are set to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in the next week. While Houston dropped to 6-4 on the season and is set to take on the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 18.
